A Case of Unilateral Fenestration and Duplication of the External Jugular Vein International Journal of Morphology
Snoj,Ziga; Cvetko,Erika.
The external jugular vein is increasingly being utilized as the recipient vein in head and neck free tissue transfers, and for cannulation in order to conduct diagnostic procedures or intravenous therapies. The variations in the patterns of its course, and knowledge of them, are therefore important. We report on a unique and previously non-described unilateral fenestration and duplication of the external jugular vein found during the neck dissection of a 77-year-old female cadaver. Embryological evaluation and clinical implications of the anomaly are described. Clinicians and surgeons performing neck vascular or reconstructive surgery should be aware of this variation of the external jugular vein in the hope of preventing inadvertent injury.

A Complex Variation of the Parietal and Visceral Branches of the Abdominal Aorta International Journal of Morphology
Unver Dogan,Nadire; Fazliogullari,Zeliha; Yilmaz,Mehmet Tugrul; Uysal,Ismihan Ilknur; Cicekcibasi,Aynur Emine; Ulusoy,Mahinur; Gunaslan,Pervin.
Variations in the branches of the abdominal aorta were determined during a routine abdominal region dissection of a 70-year-old male cadaver. Left gastric artery arose as the first root from antero-lateral of aorta. Coeliacomesenteric trunk occurred as a thick root. After 29.9mm, coeliacomesenteric trunk bifurcated as coeliac trunk and superior mesenteric artery. Coeliac trunk bifurcated as splenic artery and common hepatic artery. These multiple variations which change the normal anatomic structure of the abdominal aorta have to be kept in mind by surgeons, radiologists and anatomists.

A Rare Case of Unilateral Third Head of Sternocleidomastoid Muscle International Journal of Morphology
Cherian,Saju Binu; Nayak,Satheesha.
A rare case of unilateral third head of sternocleidomastoid muscle was noted during routine dissections for undergraduate medical students. The additional third head originated from the middle third of the clavicle and joined the normal two heads (sternal and clavicular) of the muscle in the middle of the neck. The insertion and nerve supply of the muscle was normal. This case may be important for head and neck surgeons and for plastic surgeons doing muscle graft surgeries.

Abnormal Branch of External Iliac Artery in the Iliac Fossa International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha.
An abnormal artery arising from external iliac artery was found during routine dissection class for medical undergraduates. The artery took its origin from the external iliac artery midway between its origin from common iliac and termination as femoral artery. The abnormal artery divided into two branches; an ascending and a descending. The ascending branch supplied iliacus and iliac crest. The descending branch entered the femoral triangle by passing behind the femoral sheath. It supplied the muscles of femoral triangle and anastomosed with medial circumflex femoral artery. The knowledge of this variation may be of use for surgeons doing surgery of femoral hernia.

Absence of Inferior Gluteal Artery: A Rare Observation International Journal of Morphology
Reddy,Sreenivasulu; Ramana  Vollala  ,Venkata; Rao,Mohandas.
The gluteal region is an important anatomical and clinical area which contains muscles and vital neurovascular bundles. They are important for their clinical and morphological reasons. In this manuscript we report a rare case of absence of inferior gluteal artery. In the same specimen the superior gluteal artery was taking origin from the anterior division of internal iliac artery. The structures normally supplied by the inferior gluteal artery were supplied by a branch coming from the superior gluteal artery. The developmental and clinical significance of the anatomical variation is discussed

Accessory Head of Flexor Pollicis Longus Muscle and its Significance in Anterior Interosseous Nerve Syndrome: Case Report and Review International Journal of Morphology
Potu,Bhagath Kumar; Gorantla,Vasavi Rakesh; Pulakunta,Thejodhar; Rao,M. S; Mamatha,T; Vollala,Venkata Ramana; Nayak,S. R.
During the laboratory dissection of the fore arm, an accessory head of flexor pollicis longus muscle has been observed unilaterally in the right upper limb of a male cadaver. It took its origin from the under surface of flexor digitorum superficialis muscle just distal to the origin of this muscle from medial epicondyle. On further dissection we have noticed that, the accessory belly was running downwards to the medial aspect of the tendon of flexor pollicis longus muscle for its insertion. Its possible role in anterior interosseous syndrome is discussed in detail with a brief review

Accessory Mental Foramina Assessed by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography: Report of Unilateral and Bilateral Detection International Journal of Morphology
Garay,Ivonne; Cantín,Mario.
Accessory mental foramen (AMF) is a rare anatomical variation with particular importance in local anesthesia and surgical procedures, especially the placement of dental implants. We report the cases of two adult patients, which were referred for Cone-Beam Computed tomography (CBCT) evaluation, which revealed the presence of three AMFs connected to the mandibular canal, one case with one AMF on the right side unilaterally, and another case was bilateral. The mean diameter measured for the AMFs was 1.23 (±0.45) mm, and the mean distance from the mandibular foramen to the AMF was 3.3 (±1.5) mm, with the AMF located in the premolar area superiorly or distally to the MF. CBCT is an effective tool for tridimensional assessment of AMF. A CBCT should be obtained...

An Unusual Anatomical Variation of the Levator Scapulae Muscle International Journal of Morphology
Varjão Lima,Gabriel; Cabral,Richard Halti; Andrade,Danilo Leite; Lacerda,Nayara Soares de Oliveira; Araújo,Vital Fernandes; Masuko,Telma Sumie.
Clinical and surgical importance of the levator scapulae muscle (LSM) requires a better knowledge of its anatomic variation mainly because of the possibility of new findings related to the embryologic development. This article reports a case of a left-sided LSM with atypical attachments in a 58-year-old preserved Caucasian female body. The muscle presented a bifurcation at its midpoint downward path. Its medial band attached to the anterior aspect of the left rhomboideus major muscle while its left band was fixed in the superior angle of the scapula after releasing a muscle expansion to the serratus anterior muscle. The morphometric analysis revealed LSM maximal width of 3.6 cm, bifurcation point located 6.6 cm apart from the C1 vertebral attachment;...

Anomalous Branching Pattern of Lateral Cord of Brachial Plexus International Journal of Morphology
Das,Srijit; Paul,Shipra.
During routine dissection, an unusual formation of median nerve was detected in the right upper limb of a 55 year old male cadaver. The median nerve had an additional contribution from lateral cord. The two branches of the lateral cord designated as upper and the lower branches were observed at different levels. The upper branch was in close contact with the third part of the axillary artery and it crossed the vessel anteriorly to unite with a branch of the medial cord to form the median nerve. The median nerve thus formed was related medially to the axillary artery (instead of the normal position of being anterolateral). The median nerve descended below and was joined by an additional lower branch from the lateral cord. Interestingly, the ulnar nerve...

Anomalous Lobar Pattern of Right Lung: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Modgil,Vishal; Das,Srijit; Suri,Rajesh.
The right lung classically has two fissures, an oblique and a horizontal, dividing it into three lobes namely the superior, middle and lower. The anomaly of the lobar pattern has been described by many research workers on CT scans, where as, there are fewer studies on gross anatomical specimens. In the present case , which was incidentally detected, we report three fissures dividing the right lung into four lobes. Such abnormal fissures and lobes are clinically important for identifying broncho-pulmonary segments. Anatomical knowledge of anomalies of fissures and lobes of lungs may be important for surgeons performing lobectomies, radiologists interpreting X ray and CT scans and also of academic interest to all medical personnel

Anomalous Origin of Obturator Artery from the Internal Iliac Artery International Journal of Morphology
Kumar,Dinesh; Rath,Gayatri.
Obturator arteryis frequently a branch of anterior division of internal iliac artery or one of the parietal branches of internal iliac artery. But it has attracted attention of pelvic surgeons and anatomists and radiologists because of the high frequency of the variation in its course and origin. The present report demonstrates obturator artery to be arising from the posterior division of internal iliac artery out of 316 pelvises, a rare observation in Indian population. The variation is correlated developmentally and its clinical implications are also discussed

Anomalous Origin of the Circumflex Branch from the Right Coronary Artery International Journal of Morphology
Bayat,Parvindokht; Masoud,Farhadi; Ghanbari,Ali; Gannnnji-Harsini,Sedigheh.
Coronary anomalies are a group of congenital disorders. Most of the coronary anomalies are asymptomatic and benign but may cause myocardial ischemia and sudden death. Some of them are dangerous if they associate with other heart diseases. One of the congenital coronary anomalies is anomalous origin of the circumflex branch from the right coronary artery that is a rare congenital anomaly. We present a case of a 61-year-old man with history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. The coronary angiography reveals a circumflex branch from the right coronary artery.

Bilateral Absence of Superior Gemellus Muscle in Elderly Cadaver International Journal of Morphology
Fernandes,Rodrigo M. P; Lazzoli,José K; Manaia,Jorge H. M; Babinski,Marcio A.
The superior gemellus muscle (SGM) normally arises from the outer surface of the spine of the ischium, blends with the upper part of the tendon of the obturator internus, and is inserted with it into the medial surface of the greater trochanter. In this paper, we describe an anatomical variation in which the SGM is absent bilaterally. Therefore, as there are not many cases in literature, our attention has been drawn to the importance about absence of SGM, in order to improve anatomical and clinical knowledge about this finding.

Bilateral Duplication of Gonadal Veins: a Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Ruiz Fernandes,Juliana; Bassi Strufaldi,Maíra; Machado,Bruno dos Santos; Rios Nascimento,Sergio Ricardo; Wafae,Nader; Ruiz,Cristiane Regina.
The duplication of gonadal vessels is mainly found on the left side, with less numbers of bilateral cases. The objective of this work is describing a case of bilateral duplication of gonadal veins, where two veins were draining to inferior vena cava, being that the closest vein of kidney medial margin had a thickness of 2.68mm and was distant 64.41 mm of the organ. The second vessel had a thickness of 1.43mm and was distant 73.76mm. Two veins follow to left renal vein, being that the first vessel had a thickness of 2.7mm and was distant 21.8mm of the kidney medial margin; the other had a thickness of 1.64mm and was distant 35.13mm of the organ. The presence of variations on the local of drainage of gonadal vessels has clinical importance for comprehension...

Connection between Radial and Ulnar Nerves at Humeral Level And Its Clinical Significance: A Cadaveric Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Taheri,Mohammad Mehdi Hassanzadeh; Afshar,Mohammad.
Variations of the terminal branches of the brachial plexus in the upper limb are abundant and frequently have been reported. But connection between its radial and ulnar nerves at humeral level is very rare. During routine dissection of the right arm of a 75-year-old male cadaver in the Department of Anatomy of Birjand University of Medical Sciences (BUMS), in Iran, we observed a connection between radial and ulnar nerves, and from the literature reviewed, we found only two cases that had been reported previously, one of them was unilateral and the other bilateral. Awareness of such variations are very important for surgeons and diminish the possible complication of regional anesthesia and surgical procedures, hence, we decided to report it.

Double Plantaris Muscle: A Cadaveric Study with Clinical Importance International Journal of Morphology
Rana,Kum Kum; Das,Srijit; Verma,Ranjana.
The gastrocnemius, plantaris and the soleus muscles, comprise the posterior (flexor) compartment muscles of the leg. The plantaris muscle is responsible for causing plantar flexion of the foot. The muscle is vestigial in human beings and has much clinical importance. The muscle is known to exhibit variations but there are few reports on the existence of double plantaris muscle. The present case report describes double plantaris on both sides of a cadaver, which was detected during routine dissection. Knowledge of both normal and abnormal anatomy of the plantaris muscle is important for surgeons performing tendon transfer operations and clinicians diagnosing muscle tears

Double Root Anatomical Variations in a Single Patient: Endodontic Treatment and Rehabilitation of a Three-rooted First Premolar. Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Oporto V,Gonzalo H; Saavedra,Rubén; Soto P,Camila C; Fuentes,Ramón.
Abnormal interaction between oral epithelium and underlying mesenchematic tissue during odontogenesis could result in teeth with an anatomical variation. First maxilar premolar has such variable root canal morphology. However, (0.2-6% of cases) a three-rooted premolar is particularly uncommon. First mandibular premolar frequently has one root and one single canal (75% of cases), however, a tooth with two canals and two separate roots could be found (19.5-22.5%). Execution of an accurate diagnosis of root canal system is essential to perform a successful endodontic treatment and tooth rehabilitation. This article describes diagnosis, endodontic treatment and rehabilitation (means single crown) of a maxillary three-rooted and three-canal first premolar, and...

Incidence of Humeral Head of Biceps Brachii Muscle: Anatomical Insight International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,Isurani; Nanayakkara,Ganananda; Palahepitiya,Nadeeka.
Biceps brachii is stated as one of the muscles that shows most frequent anatomical variations. Its most commonly reported anomaly is the presence of an accessory fascicle arising from the humerus which is termed as the humeral head of biceps brachii. Evidence shows a clear racial trend in the incidence of the humeral head of biceps brachii. Therefore, detailed knowledge of this variation in different populations is important for surgical interventions of the arm, nerve compression syndromes and in unexplained pain syndromes in the arm or shoulder region. The goal of this study was to elucidate the incidence and morphological features of this muscle in an adult Sri Lankan population. Upper extremities of the total of one hundred thirty five cadavers were...

Is the Conduct of Serres an Anatomical Variation in Adults? International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
In 1817, the denominated conduct of Serres was described as a formation that was highly prevalent in children's jaws, but considered as an anatomical variation in adults. In this study we analyze the presence of the denominated Serres'- conduct in 324 jaws belonging to the collection of the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo (UNIFESP), with sex and age registration, 68 subadults of age between 0 and 2 years and 256 adults of age between 18 and 100 years. We found that the prevalence was in order to 100% in the subadults group and 42.6% in the adults group. In adults, the prevalence of this anatomical structure was greater in women than in men, with a difference statistically significant for the variable sex (Chi2 = 0.0148; I.C 95%=0.29-0.91; O.R. =0.51)....

Looped External Iliac Artery: a Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha; Kumar,Naveen; Shetty,Surekha D; Guru,Anitha.
Variations of the external iliac artery are very rare. We found a rare variation in the left external iliac artery. The artery was long and formed a characteristic loop. The loop was found in the lesser pelvis in close relation to the obturator nerve. This loop may compress obturator nerve and vessels. The knowledge of this loop might be important for gynaecologists, orthopaedic surgeons and urologists since it may be involved in surgeries of hip, ovary and prostate.
